The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is perhaps the most important federal wildlife law that assists in the protection of manatees and other endangered and threatened species. Public support for the ESA has remained strong over the years, and citizens across the political spectrum believe it is important to protect America’s wildlife and habitat. But we cannot achieve the recovery we need for endangered and threatened animals without continued support from members of Congress

I Support a Strong Endangered Species Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

Today is Endangered Species Day, and I am writing to express my support for the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Over the years, the ESA has prevented many species from going extinct and helped many other species to recover. I urge you to keep the ESA strong and oppose any attempts to weaken protections for wildlife and important habitat.

I am especially concerned for Florida's manatees, which were prematurely downlisted from endangered to threatened status in 2017. Although manatees still have some safeguards under the ESA as a threatened species, they are now facing unprecedented mortality from watercraft collisions, red tide, cold weather, and starvation due to a near total collapse of the seagrasses within the Indian River Lagoon. In particular, harmful algal blooms over the last decade in Florida's Indian River Lagoon have decimated the seagrasses and aquatic vegetation that manatees need to eat and have led to hundreds of manatee deaths just this year. These algal blooms are caused by excessive human-produced nutrient pollution, which is a growing threat to all seagrass communities.

The Endangered Species Act is perhaps the most important federal wildlife law that assists in the protection of manatees and other endangered and threatened species. But the ESA is valuable for humans, too. The ESA promotes a healthier environment by giving us cleaner air, water, and land. In addition, the ESA is economically beneficial. Florida's tourism industry -- and the U.S. recreation industry as a whole -- depends on the protection of our nation's plant and animal species and the forests, grasslands, rivers, and oceans where they live. While it is important to protect individual species, this can only be truly accomplished by protecting those entire ecosystems.

Public support for the ESA has remained strong over the years, and citizens across the political spectrum believe it is important to protect America's wildlife and habitat. But we cannot achieve the recovery we need for these endangered and threatened animals without continued support and strengthening of the Endangered Species Act from members of Congress. I urge you to help keep the ESA strong and oppose any attempts to weaken this important act.
